Types of trekking poles

Update:26 Dec 2020

Currently, there are three types of trekking poles, covering almost all rock climbing and hiking activities. Two-section, three-section, and folding. Pros and cons. Some new trekking poles combine telescopic portability and folding adjustability. Next, let us analyze them separately.

1. Double expansion

The two-section telescopic trekking pole is the hardest and most stressed design, which is more suitable for people who are engaged in snow sports or those who pursue the strength of trekking poles. However, the portability of the two segments is the worst, and even if it is reduced to the shortest, it cannot be placed on the packaging well. Because it is a two-piece design, but for higher strength, there will be a lot of overlap between the two components to make them stronger. So, although they have only two parts, most of them are not so light and often heavier than other trekking poles. In recent years, due to the influence of lightweight waves, two-piece telescopic trekking poles have become rare.

2. Three-section telescopic

Three-section expansions are the most common designs on the market, and they are much more compact than two-section expansions. Almost all three-section trekking poles can be tied to a backpack, or can be easily put into a normal-sized box. The three-section type is usually lighter than the two-section type, but the strength is reduced. Nevertheless, in most cases, they are already hard and stressful enough to avoid extreme stress. Most people choose three retractable trekking poles when hiking, hiking, rock climbing and rock climbing.

3. Folding

Folding trekking poles have only really become popular in recent years. These folding trekking poles are one of the lightest and lightest trekking poles currently. Although their durability and strength are much lower than most two- to three-section telescopic trekking poles, they are durable enough for most ordinary climbers and hikers, suitable for low-to-medium-strength trekking and mountaineering. They are particularly suitable for trekking poles and cross-country athletes because they are small, light and easy to carry. You can put them on the outside or inside of your backpack so you can use them to handle the road after climbing. In general, most folding trekking poles are 18-23 cm shorter than most telescopic trekking poles. According to the degree of lightness, the weight can be 280-400 grams lighter. There are several foldable trekking poles without a detachable base, and most people do not choose to adjust the height. These are disadvantages and advantages. Then they will become lighter.

4. Mixed

Many new folding trekking poles have an adjustable telescoping design so that the height can be adjusted during use. We found it to be a great invention because it makes it more versatile. Although it is not like a complete 3-section telescopic adjustable, it can meet the normal range of use. If you don't mind the weight of one or two hundred grams, this climbing rod is a good choice.
